Some of the most important learning moments in a child’s life don’t happen at a desk. They happen while building block towers, pretending to run a restaurant, digging in sensory bins, or laughing with friends during imaginative play.
To adults, it can sometimes look like “just playing.”
But for young children, play is serious learning.
In early childhood, play helps build the foundation for nearly everything a child will need later in life. Through play, children learn how to solve problems, communicate with others, manage emotions, think creatively, and gain confidence.
When children play together, they learn:
- How to share and cooperate
- How to take turns
- How to express feelings
- How to work through frustration
- How to build friendships
Play also supports early academic development. Activities like puzzles, pretend play, storytelling, drawing, sorting, and building strengthen important skills connected to reading, math, language, and critical thinking.
Just as importantly, play helps children develop curiosity and joy in learning. Kids learn best when they feel safe, engaged, and excited to explore the world around them.
At Marine Drive Childcare, we believe childhood should be filled with meaningful play, creativity, exploration, and connection. We work hard to create an environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive through hands-on experiences every day.
Because when children are given opportunities to play, they are also being given opportunities to grow.
